Choosing Motorcycle Gear - Putting Safety First

Selecting the right motorcycle gear is very important even though riding a motorcycle is not supposed to be a fashion event.

However by having the correct motoycycle gear you can save your life in some instances.

Riding a motorcycle presents its dangers, and there are certain articles of protective clothing, or motorcycle gear as it is known in motor cycling vernacular that the driver and passengers should wear to protect themselves in the event of an accident.

In true terms, the driver does not have too many choices as they are required by law to wear the most important piece of essential motorcycle gear- the helmet.

This is probably the most uncool of items to wear for the young and egocentrically inclined motor cycle rider, who much prefer to look good riding his motorcycle on a Saturday afternoon down the main street with the wind blowing through his hair. It can really make the heads turn, especially that of the young ladies.

However the sad statistic is that many young men have accidents on motorcycles, and those of them whose heads are not protected can be killed, or suffer from brain damage that leaves them as vegetables for the rest of their lives. Motorcycle gear such a s Helmets are uncool but have a definite role to play in the motorcyclist’s life, and that is to protect it.

Nowadays, motor cycle helmets can look pretty good. Composite resin shells both strong and stylish create a dramatic effect whilst protecting your head. They also create a sense of mystery to young ladies. If batman can get away with it, you can too.

After you have taken care of your head, the next thing you have to worry about is your body and there is protective motorcycle gear for this too. The same young and egocentrically inclined motor cycle rider of the past would always been seen wearing a white t-shirt and jeans al la James Dean. Just remember what happened to him!

Today’s sensible motor cycle rider will have seen or heard of what can happen to motorcycle riders who have come of their bike and rolled along a road for a few hundred yards. While there is no form of body armor available for motor cycle riders, there are jackets, pants and boots which will help to cushion the fall and whilst they may not prevent broken bones, they can certainly prevent abrasions and cuts from occurring.

Leather motorcycle gear can look good under certain circumstances, but on a hot day it can draw and contain heat, making the driver both hot and sweaty. If you are in the market for leather, look for a design that places an emphasis more on good breathing materials than design.

Evolvements in design of motorcycle gear mean that the leather especially that used in jackets does not have to be too thick.

Composite leathers are available, both light weight and flexible. These can fit really well, and can allow the driver much more flexibility to control the bike.

Jackets and trousers can incorporate a kind of mesh, as well as heating panels for a cold day, and they can also be waterproofed.

Any motorcyclist who takes their sport/hobby seriously will invest a lot of time and thought in choosing the right boots. Motor cycle boots are up there with helmets in importance in choosing the right kind of motorcycle gear.

When choosing, the first thing you need to do is to consider the kind of riding you do most often. Motor cyclists may even need more than one pair of boots, to suit how they spend their time on their bikes. Motor cycle boots should be stiff in order to provide protection, but not too much so.

Today’s motorcycle boots are Kevlar lined, and can be easily and rapidly removed through zippers or ski-boot style buckles. They can be short, upper calf or to the knee. The have a style and a fit that makes the rider feel and look good, whilst protecting these fragile bones in the feet and ankles.

Motor cycling can be an exhilarating pass time, but you should never allow yourself to forget its dangers. Taking the maximum precautions available by investing in and wearing the essential motorcycle gear is the responsibility of the serious minded, and not the foolish.
